Margreet Markerink is the winner of the Choclo, the national composition competition for new tango dance music. At the release of the La Cadena summer issue, in early June 2008, the winning numbers will be available to everyone. Of course we wanted to know more about the composer of the fantastic new music.

Weemoed, melancholie, maar ook uitbundige en stuwende ritmes maken van de voorstellingen van Cuarteto Tangata een feest voor het oor.
Cuarteto Tangata, bestaande uit vier musici, is reeds vele jaren in de Argentijnse tango gespecialiseerd. Zij vertolken op eigen wijze de tangomuziek van maestro’s zoals: Piazzolla, Plaza, Pugliese, Troilo, Salgan, Cobian etc. Daarnaast speelt Cuarteto Tangata eigen composities geschreven door Margreet Markerink, de pianiste van het kwartet. In 2008 won zij de eerste Choclocompositieprijs voor nieuwe Argentijnse tango-muziek en bracht zij in 2017 haar album Moving Friends uit.
Jaqueline Edeling studeerde bandoneon bij Carel Kraayenhof aan het Conservatorium in Rotterdam. De in Buenos Aires geboren Andrea Bentivoglio studeerde viool bij Herman Krebbers aan het Sweelinck Conservatorium. Voor het optreden in Nijmegen wordt dit trio aangevuld met een bassist.
Deze avond zal de muziek van hun nieuwe cd met titel “Tales of a blue Heart” centraal staan.
Eind 2022 hebben ze de muziek na 2 jaar intensief samenwerken in Wisseloord Studios opgenomen. De muziek is opgenomen en gemixt door Chris Weeda. De cd bestaat uit, door Ad Colen en Margreet Markerink, eigen arrangementen van bestaande composities, onder andere van Astor Piazzolla.
“Tales of a blue Heart” is het klinkend resultaat van onze muzikale zoektocht. Het geraakte hart, met zoveel herinneringen – soms vol melancholie, maar ook vreugde – loopt als een rode draad door alle nummers van deze cd.
Margreet Markerink specialiseerde na haar klassieke studie aan het conservatorium in het componeren, arrangeren en uitvoeren van Argentijnse Tangomuziek onder supervisie van de welbekende pianist/componist Gustavo Beytelmann en bandoneonist/pianist Carel Kraayenhof op het Rotterdams Conservatorium. Vele stijlen muziek heeft zij gestudeerd en gespeeld, o.a. Bach, Chopin, Bartók en Ravel, maar ook modernere muziek. Al deze muziek heeft haar geïnspireerd tot de composities, die zij geschreven heeft. De Argentijnse tangomuziek is haar grootste inspiratie geworden.
Margreet Markerink speelt solo en daarnaast in meerdere internationaal bekende formaties.
Geïnspireerd door verschillende muzikale stijlen (van klassiek tot jazz en Balkan muziek) zijn haar composities origineel zonder het tango gevoel te verliezen. Naast haar spelen in Trio Tangata en Tango Dorado heeft ze veel samengewerkt met zangers zoals Sandra Rumolino, José Rivero, Jeannine Geerts & Jenny Arian. Zij won in 2008 de nationale “Choclo” compositieprijs voor nieuwe tangodansmuziek met 5 eigen composities
In 2017 bracht zij het album “Moving Friends” uit. Een album met vol nieuwe eigen composities. Daarnaast heeft zij meerdere cd’s met collega-musici gemaakt, waaronder 4 cds met ensemble Tangata, en 6 cds / dvd met Tango Dorado.
Ad Colen, is a Dutch jazz saxophonist, composer and band leader. Colen played the guitar, but eventually opted for the saxophone. He studied at the conservatory in Hilversum and studied with Dick Oatts in New York City

Jazz saxofonist Ad Colen en tangopianiste Margreet Markerink zijn eind 2022 de studio ingegaan, na 2 jaar intensieve samenwerking. “ Tales of a blue heart“ is het klinkend resultaat van hun muzikale zoektocht. “ Tales of a blue heart “ weerspiegelt de weg die ieder van ons gaat, in deze sterk veranderende wereld. Klimaatcrisis, pandemieën, oorlogen, hoe verhouden wij ons als individu tot zoiets groots? Terug naar het hart; Het geraakte hart, met zoveel herinneringen- soms vol melancholie, maar ook vreugde- loopt als een rode draad door alle nummers van deze cd.
De cd bestaat uit eigen composities van Colen en van Markerink en daarnaast eigen arrangementen van bestaande composities, o.a. van Astor Piazzolla. Piazzolla wist de Argentijnse tangomuziek te verbinden met klassiek- en jazz muziek. Het is deze muziek, tango Nuevo, die Colen-Markerink beiden raakt en verbindt, en het vertrekpunt werd voor musiceren en componeren. “ Tales of a blue heart” is opgenomen in de legendarische Wisseloord studio( engineer Chris Weeda) , waar beroemdheden (Rolling Stones ) hun muzikale voetafdruk hebben achtergelaten.
Markerink & Colen dragen deze cd op aan ieder, die zijn blue heart met zich meedraagt in barre tijden. Wij hopen dat de muziek je meeneemt en verwarmt. Enjoy!

After my classical studies at the conservatory I specializedn composing, arranging and performing Argentine Tango music under the supervision of the well-known pianist / composer Gustavo Beytelmann and bandoneonist / pianist Carel Kraayenhof at the Rotterdam Conservatory.
Vele muziekstijlen heb ik gestudeerd en gespeeld : van o.a. Bach, Chopin, Bartok en Ravel, maar ook modernere muziek. Al deze muziek heeft mij geïnspireerd in de composities die ik geschreven heb.

When and why did you choose the tango?
That choice was a process, not a moment. I started piano lessons as many as I was 8 years old. When I finally knew that I wanted to continue with music, I studied Music Therapy in Nijmegen. After a period of traveling through India and Nepal I started studying at the Hilversums Conservatory, classical piano. I played a lot of Spanish music and Hungarian music, I thought that was wonderful. Then, at the invitation of Carel Kraayenhof, I started studying Argentine tango at the Rotterdam Conservatory. Carel said "that's something for you". And that is true. For me all the musical aspects come together so well in tango, the rhythms and tempi, I fell in love with it. Maybe it was in me much earlier. As a child I had gymnastics lessons; I listened to Chopin a lot at the time, endlessly listening, dancing through the room on Chopin's ballads. My father was a gymnastics teacher, and for a while I had a job as a musical accompanist in rhythmic music, also for gymnasts at Papendal. Often with Chopin rhythms (red: and she effortlessly rattles the Chopin rhythm ratatata-tatata-etc.). That may have laid a foundation. The Argentine tango also has a kinship with classical European music; there are many influences from European emigrants in Argentinian culture. The tango is therefore probably very recognizable for many Europeans. The love for tango initially applied to modern tango, such as Piazolla. Only later did I discover the old tango dance music.
The Choclo competition is meant for stimulating new tango dance music. How does that renewal fit in with your development?
The talks with Carel Kraayenhof about tango interpretation have had a lot of influence on my development as a tango pianist and composer. When I first heard Astor Piazzolla's tango nuevo, I was deeply impressed. Only later did I come into contact with dance salon music. It took a while before I appreciated that. In the 1950s, Piazolla was the first to introduce jazz influences into tango, and brought a jazz guitar into his compositions and arrangements. This aroused an enormous amount of opposition from the Argentines, who felt their national heritage disgraced. Piazolla was so upset or depressed about this that he himself burned his scores. A few years ago, Christiaan van Hemert undertook to restore the original music of Piazzolla by writing the music back into score on the basis of old records. With our orchestra Tango Dorado we now play that again, with a jazz guitarist in our ensemble. In addition to Tango Dorado, I have a lot of fun with our Trio Tangata with Jaqueline Edeling and Maaike Wierda. In fact, with this I pick up the thread of the time at the Rotterdam Conservatory, when we also had a trio in this line-up with bandonéon, double bass and piano. At that time we mainly played music from myself, that was not dance music. I am very happy that the jury of the Choclo competition also describes my current tango-nuevo approach as 'very danceable'.
What will this prize do for your life?
In the first place it is wonderful if you notice that the music that you write yourself is appreciated in the tango world. There will be an acceleration. Christiaan van Hemert will arrange my winning compositions for Tango Dorado performance. Part of the prize is that we can put these compositions on CD in a professional studio. My dream is that in some time we will be invited to perform in Argentina, both with Tango Dorado and with Trio Tangata.
