"The tango" does not exist. Tangos have so many aspects that several types of tango can be distinguished. You can hardly hear really flaming passion tango since Astor Piazzolla has elevated the tango to an art form. Since that time you mainly hear intelligent, ingenious tangos. You also hear less and less the old-fashioned warm knus tango or the emotional melancholy tango.
Also with the Dutch company Tango Dorado you can hear that they have listened well to all kinds of tangos. They don't seem to want to make a real choice, but with the double CD Old Places And New Grounds they show that they have a good command of various aspects of tango. The first CD, Old Places, focuses on the warm knustango, with elegant, elegant arrangements and a melancholic appearance. The warm voice of singer Sandra Rumolino fits perfectly here.
The second CD shows the influence of Piazzolla more clearly. Civilization and intelligence are played on New Grounds, and guest singers José Rivero and Richard Prada fit in perfectly with this approach. The second CD is by far the most interesting, although the adventurous approach does not always work out well. The somewhat dull jazz guitar on El Entrariano, for example, takes the tension out, but in the final track, Verano, all brakes are released. In between you will hear surprising and exciting arrangements in various places. In the footsteps of Piazzolla, that is for sure, but Tango Dorado knows how to do fun things of its own. An excellent band, and all together two very nice CDs of international level.
